林西河椿聞鶯時云。

田家椹熟麥將稠。

綠樹初聞黃栗留。似識洛陽花下客。

殷勤百囀未能休。

崔文淸公滋夜直聞採眞峰鶴唳詩云。

雲掃長空月正明。

松棲宿鶴不勝淸。滿山猿鳥知音少。

獨刷䟱翎半夜鳴。

二詩俱是不遇感傷之作。然文淸氣節慷慨。非林之比。

서하 임춘의 문앵시는 이렇다.

농가에 오디 익고 보리가 자랐는데,

푸른 나무 사이에서 꾀꼬리 소리 처음으로 듣는다. 낙양 꽃 아래 손을 아는 듯,

은근히 울어대며 그치지 않네.

문청공 최자의 야직문채진봉학려라는 시는 이렇다.

구름 걷힌 장공에 달 정히 밝은데,

소나무에 깃들어 자는 학은 맑음을 이기지 못하네. 산에 잔나비와 새 가득해도 알아주는 이 없어,

홀로 성긴 날개를 퍼덕이며 밤중에 우노라.

두 편의 시가 모두 불우한 처지를 슬퍼하며 지은 작품이다. 그러나 최자의 시는 기개와 절개가 강개하여 임춘의 시에 비길 것이 아니다.

Im Ch’un’s 林椿 (ca. 1180; sobriquet Sŏha [West River]) poem “Listening to Orioles” 聞鶯 reads,

In the farm, mulberries are ripe and barley grows thick.

From green trees, I hear the sound of yellow orioles. You seem to recognize Luoyang’s traveler passing by the flowers!

For you warble on with passion without rest.

Ch’oe Cha’s 崔滋 (1188–1260; sobriquet Munch’ŏng [Literary Clarity]) poem “During an Overnight Duty Listening to a Crane Cry on Ch’aejin Peak” 夜直聞採眞峯鶴唳 reads,

Clouds have cleared away in the sky. Now the moon shines on.

The crane resting in its pine nest cannot contain this pure sight. In the mountain full of gibbons and birds, few understand your sound.

Fanning the fluttering feathers, you alone cry in midnight.

Both poems express the sorrow of not having met their opportune time. However, Im’s does not measure up to the spirited integrity of Ch’oe’s.
