余昔登第之年。嘗余同年遊通濟寺。余及四五人佯落後徐行。聯鞍唱和。以首唱者韻。各賦四韻詩。此旣路上口唱。非有所筆。而亦直以爲詩人常語。便不復記之也。其後再聞有人傳云。此詩流入中國。大爲士大夫所賞。其人唯誦一句云。蹇驢影裡碧山暮。斷雁聲中紅樹秋。此句尤其所愛者。余聞之。亦未之信也。後復有人能記一句云。獨鶴何歸天杳杳。行人不盡路悠悠。其首落句則皆所不知也。余雖未聰明。亦不甚椎鈍者也。豈其時率爾而作。略不置意而偶忘之耶。昨者歐陽伯虎訪余。有座客言及此詩。因問之曰。相國此詩傳播大國。信乎。歐遽對曰。不唯傳播。皆作畵簇看之。客稍疑之。歐曰。若爾余明年還國。可䝴其畵及此詩全本來以示也。噫果若此言。則此實非分之言。非所敢當也。此前所寄絶句贈歐曰。慚愧區區一首詩。一觀猶足又圖爲。雖知中國曾無外。無乃明公或有欺。

Korean Translation

내가 옛날 과거에 급제하던 해에 동년(同年)들과 통제사(通濟寺)에 놀러 갔었다. 그때 나와 4~5인은 일부러 뒤떨어져서 말 안장을 나란히하고 천천히 가면서 시를 창화(唱和)하였다. 맨 먼저 지은 사람의 시운(詩韻)을 가지고 각기 사운시(四韻詩)를 지었다. 이 시는 이미 노상에서 입으로 부른 것이라 붓으로 쓸 만한 것이 있지도 않거니와, 또한 시인의 상어(常語)로 생각하여 아예 기억하지도 않았던 것이다. 그런데 그 뒤에 두 번이나 다음과 같은 이야기를 들었다. 어떤 사람이 전하기를, “이 시가 중국에 흘러 들어가서 사대부들에게 크게 칭송받는 바가 되었다.” 하고, 그 사람은, 나귀 그림자 속에 푸른 산이 저물고 / 蹇驢影裡碧山暮 외기러기 울음 속에 단풍지는 가을일러라 / 斷雁聲中紅樹秋 는 한 시구만을 외면서, “이 시구가 더욱 사랑을 받는다.” 하였다. 나는 그 말을 듣고 또한 믿지 않았다. 그 뒤에 또 한 사람이, 외로운 학은 어디 가고 하늘은 아득한고 / 獨鶴何歸天杳杳 다니는 사람 끊이지 않는데 길은 길구나 / 行人不盡路悠悠 라는 한 시구 만을 기억하고, “첫구와 끝구는 다 알지 못한다.” 하였다. 내가 비록 총명하지는 못하나 또한 매우 노둔한 사람은 아닌데, 〈기억하지 못하는 것은〉 아마 그때 갑작스레 짓고 조금도 유의하지 않아 우연히 잊어서일까. 전번 구양백호(歐陽伯虎)가 나를 찾아왔을 때 좌석에 있던 어떤 손이 이 시에 언급하고 이내 묻기를, “상국(相國)의 이 시가 대국에 전파되었다 하는데 진실입니까?” 하니, 구양백호는 선뜻 대답하기를, “전파되었을 뿐만 아니라, 모두 화족(畫簇)을 만들어서 봅니다.” 하자, 그 손은 약간 의심하였다. 그러자 구양백호는, “그렇게 의심하신다면, 내가 명년에 환국하여 그림과 시의 전본(全本)을 싸가지고 와서 보여주겠습니다.” 하였다. 아, 과연 이 말과 같다면, 이는 실로 분에 넘치는 말이니 감당할 바 아니로다. 전에 부친 절구를 차운하여 구양백호에게 주었는데, 그 시는 이러하다. 부끄럽도다! 구구한 이 한 수의 시는 / 慚愧區區一首詩 한 번 보아줌도 족한데 또 그림까지 그렸나 / 一觀猶足又圖爲 중국이 이처럼 외국을 차별하지 않음을 누가 알았으랴 / 誰知中國曾无外 명공께서 혹 속이는 것은 아닌지 / 無乃明公或有欺

English Translation

In the year I passed the civil service examination (1189), I visited T’ongje Monastery together with my fellow graduates. Five or six of us lagged behind the rest of the group and bringing our saddles close, we took turns harmonizing with each other’s poetry. The person ahead chose a rhyme word, and each of us composed a regulated verse. These were verbal compositions along the way. We had no means to write them down and considered them as everyday expressions of a poet, not bothering to record them later. Sometime afterward, someone told me that those poems reached China and were greatly admired by the literati there. He even recited one couplet, 蹇驢影裏碧山暮斷雁聲中紅樹秋 A shadow of a lame donkeyin the green mountain at dust.A call of a lone goose amidst crimson autumn trees. He said that people particularly loved it. When I heard it, I did not believe him. Later on, I met another man who could quote another couplet, 獨鶴何歸天杳杳行人不盡路悠悠 Where does the lone crane return? The sky is endless. The traveler never stops. The road stretches on. No one could recall the first and last couplets of the poem. Although I am not smart, I am not empty-headed either. Could it be that the poem was composed hastily, and I did not give much thought and later forgot? Yesterday, Ouyang Bohu 歐陽伯虎 (12th century) visited me. Another guest brought up the poem and asked him, “Is it true that Minister Yi’s poem is known throughout China?” Ouyang quickly responded, “Not only is it known, but it also made into painting scrolls for people to admire.” When the guest expressed doubt, Ouyang said, “When I return to China next year, I will buy the paintings with the complete poem and show them to you!” Ah! If what he said is true, this is truly unbelievable and certainly not something I deserve. I presented a poem to Ouyang using the rhymes of an early poem, 慚愧區區一首詩一觀猶足又圖爲誰知中國曾無外無乃明公或有欺 What shame! That trifling poem!One viewing should be enough, yet it’s now on paintings! Who knew that the Middle Kingdomwas so generous in judging outsiders? Could it be that you, O sir, are joking with me?
