侍中金富軾。學士鄭知常。文章齊名一世。兩人爭軋不相能。世傳知常有琳宮梵語罷。天色淨瑠璃之句。富軾喜而索之。欲作己詩。終不許。後知常爲富軾所誅。作陰鬼。富軾一日詠春詩曰。柳色千絲錄。桃花萬點紅。忽於空中。鄭鬼批富軾頰曰。千絲萬點。有孰數之也。何不曰。柳色絲絲錄。桃花點點紅。富軾心頗惡之。後往一寺。偶登厠。鄭鬼從後握陰囊。問曰。不飮酒。何面紅。富軾徐曰。隔岸丹楓照顔紅。鄭鬼緊握陰囊曰。何物皮囊子。富軾曰。汝父囊鐵乎。色不變。鄭鬼握囊尤力。富軾竟死於厠中。

Korean Translation

시중(侍中) 김부식(金富軾)과 학사 정지상은 문장으로 함께 한때 이름이 났는데, 두 사람은 알력이 생겨서 서로 사이가 좋지 못했다. 세속에서 전하는 바에 의하면 지상이, 임궁(琳宮)에서 범어를 파하니 / 琳宮梵語罷 하늘 빛이 유리처럼 깨끗하이 / 天色凈琉璃 라는 시구를 지은 적이 있었는데, 부식(富軾)이 그 시를 좋아한 끝에 그를 구하여 자기 시로 삼으려 하자, 지상은 끝내 들어 주지 않았다. 뒤에 지상은 부식에게 피살되어 음귀(陰鬼)가 되었다. 부식이 어느 날 봄을 두고 시를 짓기를, 버들 빛은 일천 실이 푸르고 / 柳色千絲綠 복사꽃은 일만 점이 붉구나 / 桃花萬點紅 하였더니, 갑자기 공중에서 정지상 귀신이 부식의 뺨을 치면서, “일천 실인지, 일만 점인지 누가 세어보았는냐? 왜, 버들 빛은 실실이 푸르고 / 柳色絲絲綠 복사꽃은 점점이 붉구나 / 桃花點點紅 라고 하지 않는가?” 하매, 부식은 마음속으로 매우 그를 미워하였다. 뒤에 부식이 어느 절에 가서 측간에 올라 앉았더니, 정지상의 귀신이 뒤쫓아 와서 음낭을 쥐고 묻기를, “술도 마시지 않았는데, 왜 낯이 붉은가?” 하자, 부식은 서서히 대답하기를, “언덕에 있는 단풍이 낯에 비쳐 붉다.” 하니, 정지상의 귀신은 음낭을 더욱 죄며, “이놈의 가죽주머니는 왜 이리 무르냐?” 하자, 부식은, “네 아비 음낭은 무쇠였더냐?” 하고 얼굴빛을 변하지 않았다. 정지상의 귀신이 더욱 힘차게 음낭을 죄므로 부식은 결국 측간에서 죽었다 한다.

English Translation

Chief Minister (sijung) Kim Pusik 金富軾 (1075–1151) and Academician (haksa) Chŏng Chisang were both renowned for their writing. The rivalry between the two seemed endless. A poem attributed to Chŏng Chisang had been circulating, reading, 琳宮梵語罷 天色靜琉璃 In the jade palace, the chanting of Sūtra has ended. All is quiet under the blue-glazed sky.Kim Pusik liked it and wanted to claim it as his own, but Chŏng did not allow it. Later, Chŏng was put to death by Kim and became a ghost. Then one day, Kim wrote a poem on spring, 柳色千絲綠 桃花萬點紅 A thousand catkins on the willows are green.Ten thousand petals of peach blossoms are pink. Suddenly, the ghost of Chŏng Chisang appeared from the sky and slapped Kim in the face, saying, “Who counts a thousand catkins and ten thousand petals? Why not say this? 柳色絲絲綠 桃花點點紅 Catkin after catkin, the willows are green. Petal after petal, peach blossoms are pink. Kim became even more envious in his heart. Later, when he was in a latrine at a monastery, Chŏng’s ghost followed him and grabbed him by his testicles and said, “If you haven’t been drinking, why is your face so red?” Kim slowly answered, “The red maples on the other side illuminates my face red.” Gripping his testicles even tigter, Chŏng’s ghost asked, “Why are your leather sacks so soft?” Kim replied, “Then were your father’s testicles made of iron?” and did not change his expression. Chŏng’s ghost squeezed the testicles even harder, and Kim eventually died there in the latrine.
