詩話載李山甫覽漢史詩曰。王莽弄來曾半沒。曹公將去便平沈。余意謂此可句也。有高英秀者譏之曰。是破船詩也。余意凡詩言物之體。有不言其體而直言其用者。山甫之寓意。殆必以漢爲之船而直言其用曰。半沒平沈。若其時而山甫在而言曰。汝以吾詩爲破舡詩然也。余以漢擬之船而言之也。而善乎子之能之也。則爲英秀者何辭以答之也。詩話亦以英秀爲惡喙薄徒。則未必用其言也。
《서청시화(西淸詩話)》에 이산보(李山甫)가 한사(漢史)를 보고 읊은 시가 다음과 같이 실려 있다. 왕망이 희롱해 오매 일찍이 반쯤 빠졌더니 / 王莽弄來曾半沒 조공이 가져 가니 문득 깊이 잠겼다 / 曹公將去便平沈 나는 이를 아름다운 시구로 여긴다. 그런데 고영수(高英秀)라는 자가 기롱하기를 ‘파강시(破舡詩)’라 하였다. 나는 생각건대, 무릇 시란 물(物)의 체(體)를 말하기도 하고, 또는 그 체를 말하지 않고 곧장 그 용(用)을 말하는 것도 있다. 산보(山甫)가 뜻을 밝힌 것은, 필시 한(漢) 나라를 배[舡]에 비유하고 곧장 그 용을 말하기를 ‘반쯤 빠졌다’ ‘깊이 잠겼다’고 한 것이리라. 만일 그 당시에 산보가 있어서 말하기를, “자네가 내 시를 파강시라고 하니, 그렇다. 내가 한 나라를 배에 비유하여 말하였는데, 장하도다, 자네가 능히 알아봄이여!” 라고 하였더라면, 영수(英秀)는 무슨 말로 답변했겠는가. 《시화》에서는 또한 영수를 함부로 지껄이는 경박한 무리로 여겼다면 반드시 그의 말을 쓰지 않았을 것이다.
In the Xiqing shihua (Remarks on Poetry from the Hall of Western Clarity), there is a poem by Li Shanfu’s 李山甫 (jinshi 1049) on reading the history of the Han Dynasty. 王莽弄來曾半浸曹公將去便平沈 Wang Mang fetched itand drowned it halfway. Then Cao Cao seized it and sank to the bottom. I consider this couplet to be excellent, but a certain Gao Yingxiu 高英秀 (10th century) ridiculed it as a “poem about a shipwreck.” Poetry conveys the essence (ch’e) of things, and at times, poems may directly speak of use (yong) without speaking of essence. In employing allegorical meaning (uŭi), Li must have deliberately compared the Han dynasty to a ship, thus directly describing its use through the phrases “half drowned” and “fully sunk.” Had Li been there with Gao, he might have said, “You claim my poem is about a shipwreck, and you are correct. I intentionally compared the Han to a ship, which is why I composed it this way. How remarkable that you perceived it!” Then with what words (sa) could Gao have responded? In the Xiqing shihua, if Gao were indeed regarded as ill-mannered and ignorant, such words would not have been used.
