夜夢有人以靑玉硯滴小甁授余。扣之有聲。下圓而上尖。有兩竅極窄。復視之無竅。寤而異之。以詩解之曰。夢中得玉甁。綠螢光鑑地。扣之鏗有聲。緻潤宜貯水。剩將添硯波。快作詩千紙。神物喜幻化。天工好兒戱。脗然翻閉口。不受一滴泚。有如仙石開。罅縫流淸髓。須臾復堅合。不許人容指。混沌得七竅。七日乃見死。怒風號衆穴。萬擾從此起。讚瓠憂屈轂。穿珠厄夫子。凡物貴其全。刳鑿反爲累。形全與神全。要間漆園吏。

Korean Translation

어느날 밤 꿈에 어떤 사람이 푸른 옥으로 된 조그마한 연적(硯滴)을 나에게 주기에, 두드려보니 소리가 나고 밑은 둥글고 위는 뾰족하였으며, 매우 작은 두 구멍이 있었는데, 다시 보니 구멍이 없어졌다. 꿈에서 깨어 그를 이상히 여겨 시로 다음과 같이 풀이하였다. 꿈속에 옥병을 얻었는데 / 夢中得玉甁 푸른 옥 빛이 땅을 환히 비치네 / 綠瑩光鑑地 두드리니 쟁그랑 소리 나고 / 扣之鏗有聲 단단하고 윤택하니 물 담기 알맞다 / 緻潤宜貯水 여유있게 벼루에 물을 부어서 / 剩將添硯波 시 천 장을 쾌히 지으리라 / 快作詩千紙 조물주는 변화하는 걸 기뻐하고 / 神物喜幻化 천신은 아이의 장난 같은 일을 좋아하는구려 / 天工好兒戲 갑자기 구멍이 틈없이 닫혀져서 / 脗然飜閉口 한 방울 물도 받지 않는군 / 不受一滴沘 신선 돌에 틈이 열려서 / 有如仙石開 그 틈에서 석종유(石鐘乳)가 흐르는 것과 같으니 / 罅縫流靑髓 잠시 뒤엔 다시 굳게 닫혀져서 / 須臾復堅合 사람의 쏜가락도 용납하지 않는다 / 不許人容指 혼돈이 일곱 구멍을 얻더니 / 混沌得七竅 이레 만에 바로 죽었노라 / 七日乃見死 폭풍이 뭇구멍에서 일어서 / 怒風號衆穴 온갖 요란이 이로 좇아 일어났다 / 萬擾從此起 박을 쪼개는 일은 굴곡(屈轂)에게 걱정을 끼쳤고 / 鑽瓠憂屈轂 구슬을 꿰는 일은 부자를 괴롭혔다 / 穿珠厄夫子 모든 물건은 그 온전한 것이 귀하니 / 凡物貴其全 박을 쪼개는 일은 도리어 누가 된다 / 瓠鑿反爲累 형체가 온전함과 정신이 온전함에 관해서는 / 形全與神全 칠원리(漆園吏)에게 물어보라 / 要問漆園吏

English Translation

One night, in a dream, someone handed me a small bottle-shaped water dropper made of green jade. When tapped, it emitted a delicate sound. It had a round bottom, a pointed top, and two miniscule holes. When I looked again, however, the holes had disappeared. I woke up with a strange feeling and wrote a poem to interpret the dream. 夢中得玉甁綠瑩光鑑地扣之鏗有聲緻潤宜貯水剩將添硯波快作詩千紙神物喜幻化天工好兒戲脗然飜閉口不受一滴沘有如仙石開罅縫流靑髓須臾復堅合不許人容指混沌得七竅七日乃見死怒風號衆穴萬擾從此起鑽瓠憂屈轂穿珠厄夫子凡物貴其全瓠鑿反爲累形全與神全要問漆園吏 In a dream I received a jade bottle,its green radiance reflecting on the ground.When tapped, it produced a resounding sound,delicate and smooth, suitable for holding water. I’ll use it replenish an inkstone,and swiftly compose poems on a thousand sheets of paper. This enchanted object revels in transformations.A creation of Heaven, embracing child’s play.The bottle opened wide, then abruptly sealed shut. Now it refuses to accept even a single drop of water!It seemed like an immortal’s stone, unsealed,revealing its green marrow within, then in an instant, it closed firmly once again,allowing no room, not even a finger!Hundun received seven orifices,and after seven days, he met his demise. Furious winds howled through the apertures,and from there, myriad troubles arose. Drilling holes in the gourd caused concern for Qugu.Stringing the bead brought distress to Master Confucius.All things are valuable in their wholeness.Piercing the gourd would only destroy it.
