先輩有以文名世者七人。自以爲一時豪俊。遂相與爲七賢。蓋慕晋之七賢也。每相會飮酒賦詩。傍若無人。世多譏之。時余年方十九。吳德全許爲忘年友。每携詣其會。其後德全遊東都。余復詣其會。李淸卿目余曰。子之德全。東遊不返。子可補耶。余立應曰。七賢豈朝庭官爵而補其闕耶。未聞稽院之後。有承之者。闔坐皆大笑。又使之賦詩。占春人二字。余立成。口號曰。榮參竹下會。快倒甕中春。未識七賢內。誰爲鑽核人。一座頗有慍色。卽傲然大醉而出。余少狂如此。世人皆目以全狂客也。

Korean Translation

선배 중에 문장으로 세상에 이름난 자가 일곱 사람인데, 그들은 스스로 한때의 호준(豪俊)이라 생각하고 서로 어울려서 칠현(七賢)이라 하였으니, 아마 진(晉) 나라의 칠현을 사모한 것이었으리라. 매일 함께 모여서 술을 마시며 시를 짓되 자기들 외에는 아무도 없는 것처럼 하니, 세상에서 그를 빈정대는 사람들이 많았다. 그때 내 나이 19세였는데, 오덕전(吳德全)이 망년우(忘年友)로 삼아 항상 그 모임에 데리고 갔었다. 그 뒤 덕전(德全)이 동도(東都 경주(慶州))에 놀러갔을 때 내가 다시 그 모임에 참석하였더니, 이청경(李淸卿 청경은 이담지(李湛之)의 자)이 나를 보고 말하기를, “자네의 덕전이 동도에 놀러가서 돌아오지 않으니, 자네가 그를 보충(補充)하겠는가?” 하므로, 내가 곧 대답하기를, “칠현이 조정의 벼슬인가요? 어찌 그 궐(闕)을 보충한단 말이요? 혜강(嵇康)ㆍ완적(阮籍) 뒤에 그를 계승(繼承)한 이가 있었다는 말을 듣지 못했소.” 하니, 모두들 크게 웃었다. 또 나보고 시를 짓게 하면서 춘(春)ㆍ인(人) 두 자를 운(韻)으로 부르기에 내가 곧, 영광스럽게도 대나무 아래 모임에 참여하여 / 榮參竹下會 유쾌히 독 안의 술을 마시네 / 快倒甕中春 모르겠다 칠현 중에 / 未識七賢中 누가 오얏씨 뚫는 사람인고 / 誰爲鑽核人 라고 불렀더니, 모두들 불쾌한 기색이 있었다. 그래서 나는 곧 거만스러운 태도로 거나하게 취해서 나와 버렸다. 내가 젊어서 이처럼 미치광이 같았으므로 세상 사람들은 모두 나를 광객(狂客)으로 지목했었다.

English Translation

Among my seniors, seven were renowned writers who considered themselves the icons of their time, calling one another the Seven Sages in emulation of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove from the Jin dynasty. They often gathered for wine and poetry and acted insolently. Thus, many criticized them. I was nineteen at the time. O Sejae made me a young friend of his and took me to their meetings. Later, O went to the eastern capital Kyŏngju. When I attended their meeting, Yi Tamji 李湛之 (12th century) said to me, “Your friend O has not returned from his trip. Would you like to take his place?” I stood up and responded, “Are the Seven Sages like court positions? Why would there be a need to fill in? I have not heard of anyone taking the places of Ji Kang 嵇康 (223–262) and Ruan Ji 阮籍 (210–263)!” Those seated burst into laughter and asked me to compose a poem using the rhyme words “spring” 春 and “person” 人. I quickly recited, 榮參竹下會快倒甕中春未識七賢內誰為鑽核人 What an honor to attend this gathering among the bamboos! Merrily I pour spring wine from the crock. I still haven’t figured out who among the Seven Sages was the person that bored the seeds. As they all frowned in annoyance, I proudly left the place fully intoxicated. In my youth, I was wild like this. Everyone thought I was a mad guest.
