知奏事崔公宅。千葉榴花盛開。世所罕見。特喚李內翰仁老。金內翰克己。李留院湛之。咸司直淳及余。占韻命賦。余詩云。玉顔初被酒。紅暈十分侵。葩馥鍾天巧。姿矯挑客尋。爇香晴引蝶。散火夜驚禽。惜艶敎開晩。誰知造物心。自况余晩達。

Korean Translation

지주사(知奏事) 최공(崔公)의 집에 천엽류(千葉榴) 꽃이 만발하였다. 그것은 세상에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 것이었다. 그래서 내한(內翰) 이인로(李仁老)ㆍ내한 김극기(金克己)ㆍ유원(留院) 이담지(李湛之)ㆍ사직(司直) 함순(咸淳)과 나를 특별히 초청하여 문자를 내서 시를 짓게 하였다. 나의 시는 다음과 같다. 백옥 같은 미인 얼굴 처음 술에 취하여 / 玉顔初被酒 붉은 빛이 십분이나 더하듯 / 紅暈十分侵 꽃다운 꽃송이 조물주의 온갖 기교 모였고 / 葩馥鍾天巧 아리따운 그 자태 유객의 마음 끄누나 / 姿嬌挑客尋 훈훈한 향기 맑은 날에 나비를 이끌고 / 爇香晴引蝶 불빛처럼 환한 꽃 밤에 새를 놀라게 하네 / 散火夜驚禽 그처럼 고운 것을 늦게 피도록 하였으니 / 惜艶敎開晩 누가 조물주의 마음을 알겠는가 / 誰知造物心 내가 늦게 출세한 것을 비유한 것이다.

English Translation

In the house of Ch’oe Ch’unghŏn 崔忠獻 (1149–1219), the Administrator of Memorials (chijusa), pomegranate flowers with multiple petals were in full bloom. It was a rare sight, so he extended an exclusive invitation to Academician (naehan) Yi Illo, Academician Kim Kŭkki, Royal Document Official (yuwŏngwan) Yi Tamji, Rectifier (sajik) Ham Sun, and myself and had us compose verses to his rhymes. Here is my contribution: 玉顔初被酒紅暈十分侵葩馥鍾天巧姿嬌挑客尋爇香晴引蝶散火夜驚禽惜艶敎開晩誰知造物心 Your jade-white face, with the blush of wine for the first time, radiates a crimson hue.Beautiful and fragrant, Heaven’s creation,with charming looks you draw people nigh. In the day, your smoldering scent entices butterflies.At night, your blazing glow startles birds.Making such dazzling beauty a late bloomer,who can fathom the mind of the Maker of All? The poem alludes to my belated entry into public service.
