余嘗聚孤竹五言古詩。亡兄古歌行。蘇相五言律。芝川七言律。蓀谷玉峯及亡姊七言絶句。爲一帙看之。其音節格律。悉逼古人。而所恨氣不及焉。嗚呼。孰返其元聲耶。
나는 일찍이 고죽의 오언 고시와 율시, 그리고 돌아가신 형님의 고가행(古歌行) 소재 정승의 오언율시, 황지천의 칠언율시, 이손곡(李蓀谷)ㆍ백옥봉 및 돌아가신 누님의 칠언절구를 모아 한 질의 책을 만들고 읽어보니 그 음절(音節)과 격률(格律)이 모두 고인에게 가까웠으나 한스러운 것은 기(氣)가 미치지 못하는 것이었다. 아, 누가 그 본래 소리를 돌이킬 수 있을 것인가?
Once I gathered Ch’oe Kyŏngch’ang’s five-character ancient style poems and regulated poems, my late brother’s ancient free style poems, No Susin’s five-character regulated poems, Hwang Chŏnguk’s seven-character regulated poems, and seven-character quatrains by Yi Tal, Paek Kwanghun, and my late sister, and arranged them into a book and read it. In sound and rhythm (ŭmjŏl) and forms (kyŏngnyul), they approached the ancients, but their vigor (ki), regrettably, could not reach the ancients. Ah! Who can bring back their original sound?
