Yi Chehyŏn’s father-in-law was Kwŏn Po權溥(1262–1346; sobriquet Kukchae [Chrysanthemum Studio]). Kwŏn and his wife died at the age of eighty-four but his wife passed away before he did. A couplet in Yi’s eulogy poem for his father-in-law reads,姮娥相待廣寒殿居士獨歸兜率天The Moon Goddess awaits at the Lunar Palace. But the hermit returns alone to Tushita Heaven. Kwŏn was keen on Buddhism and therefore there is no harm in using the comparison of him finding true joy in Tushita Heaven. The story of the Moon Goddess stealing the elixir was used by poets since the ancient times as an analogy of elopement of singing girls. I do not feel comfortable about his use of this analogy on his mother-in-law. |
