Im Ŏngnyŏng was high-minded (komae) in character and his poetry was also like his person. His poem on Naksan Monastery has the appearance of a soaring dragon and a diving fish. The force of his writing moves swiftly (pidong), and almost matches in splendor with the marvelous scenery. The following phrase by him, My heart, together with flowing water, leaves the mundane world. In dream, I become a white gull and drift above the river. is tough and bold (kyogyo), it has a manner of a divine dragon playing in the sea. |
