| 我國詩。當以李容齋爲第一。沈厚和平。澹雅純熟。其五言古詩。入杜出陳。高古簡切。有非筆舌所可讚揚。吾平生所喜詠一絶。平生交舊盡凋零。白髮相看影與形。正是高樓明月夜。笛聲凄斷不堪聽。無限感慨。讀之愴然。 |

| 우리나라 시로는 이용재(李容齋)를 첫째로 함이 마땅하다. 그의 시풍은 침착하고 화평하며 아담하고 순숙(純熟)하다. 오언고시(五言古詩)는 두보(杜甫)와 진후산(陳後山)의 품격과 비슷하여 고고(高古)ㆍ간절(簡切)하여 글이나 말로는 찬양할 수가 없다. 내가 평소에 즐겨 읊던 절구 한 수로
평생에 사귄 벗 모두 늙어 죽어가고 / 平生交舊盡凋零 흰머리 마주 보니 그림자와 몸뚱이라 / 白髮相看影與形 때마침 고루에 달조차 밝은 밤엔 / 正是高樓明月夜 애처로운 피리소리 어찌 차마 들으리 / 笛聲凄斷不堪聽 는 감개가 무량하여 이를 읽노라면 가슴이 메어진다. |

| As far as our country’s poetry is concerned, Yi Yongjae’s is the best. It is deep (ch’imhu) and harmonious (hwap’yŏng), simple and elegant (tam’a) and skillful (sunsuk). His five-character ancient poems are on a par with those by Du Fu and Chen Shidao. Lofty and ancient (kogo), pithy and precise (kanjŏl), no brush or tongue can praise them enough. Throughout life, I have loved reciting this quatrain by him. 平生交舊盡凋零白髮相看影與形正是高樓明月夜笛聲凄斷不堪聽 Friends for life have all fallen and scattered. White-haired, we look at each other, all shadows and forms. Now, at this tall tower on this moon-lit night,the bamboo flute’s heart-rendering soundI cannot bear to listen. Boundlessly expressing his stirring emotion (kamgae), reading it makes one sorrowful (ch’angyŏn). |
