| 蘇退休少與尙左相同僚。而尙爲下官。及入相。以畫雁軸。求詩於退休。休作一絶書送曰。蕭蕭孤影暮江潯。紅蓼花殘兩岸陰。漫向西風呼舊侶。不知雲水萬重深。含思深遠。尙見而嗟悼之。 |

| 소퇴휴(蘇退休 퇴휴는 소세양(蘇世讓)의 호)가 젊었을 적에는 상 좌상(尙左相 상진(尙震)을 가리킴)과 동료로 지냈는데 상(尙)이 하관(下官)으로 있었다. 그러다가 재상이 되자 기러기 그린 화축(畫軸)을 가지고 퇴휴에게 시를 지어달라고 요청했다. 퇴후가 절구 한 구를 지어 써 보냈는데
쓸쓸한 외그림자 저녁 강가 비치고 / 蕭蕭孤影暮江潯 붉은 여뀌꽃 시들어 두 기슭에 그늘졌네 / 紅蓼花殘兩岸陰 부질없이 서풍 향해 옛 짝을 불러대며 / 漫向西風呼舊侶 구름 물 만 겹이나 깊은 줄 모르누나 / 不知雲水萬重深 라 했으니, 함축된 의사가 심원한지라 상 정승이 보고는 탄식하며 서글퍼했다. |

| When So Seyang was young, he was a colleague with later Second State Councilor (chwaŭijŏng) Sang Chin, and Sang was So’s subordinate. When Sang became a State Councilor, he saked So to write a poem on a scroll painting of geese. So wrote a quatrain and sent it to him. The poem said, 蕭蕭孤影暮江潯紅蓼花殘兩岸陰漫向西風呼舊侶不知雲水萬重深 Gloomy, you cast a lonely shadow in the dimming riverside.Red reeds with fading flowers cast shades on both shores.In vain, toward westerly wind you call for the old companion,not knowing that clouds and waters are thousands of layers deep.The implied meaning is profound and lasting (simwŏn). When Sang read it, he sighed sorrowfully. |
