Among official style poems (kwan’gaksi) of recent time, Yi Sanhae’s is the best. From early years, his poems followed the Tang style, and in late years during his exile in Py’ŏnghae he reached his height. Ko Kyŏngmyŏng (sobriquet Chebong [Clear Peak after Rain]) also made his great improvement only during the period of abandonment. From this we learn that writing does not come from riches and honor, but after experiencing hardships and through the help of mountains and rivers, then can one enter its wondrous (myo) stage. How can it only be the two men? The ancients were all like this as well, such as Liu Zongyuan during his demotion in Liuzhou and Su Shi during his exile in the land beyond the passes. |
