余赴遂安日。黃芝川送以詩曰。詩才突兀行間出。官況蹉跎分外奇。摠是人生各有命。悠悠餘外且安之。殊甚感慨。公少日在玉堂。時李伯生，崔嘉運，河大而輩。俱尙唐韻。詠省中小桃。篇什甚多。公和之曰。無數宮花倚粉墻。游蜂戲蝶趁餘香。老翁不及春風看。空有葵心向太陽。含意深遠。措辭奇悍。爲詩不當若是耶。綺麗風花。返傷其厚。
내가 수안(遂安)에 부임하는 날 황지천이 시로 전송하여 시재(詩才)는 우뚝하니 동료들 가운데 뛰어나나 / 詩才突兀行間出 벼슬 복은 어그러져 분수 밖에 기구하네 / 官況蹉跎分外奇 이 모두 인생에는 각기 명이 있으니 / 摠是人生各有命 유유한 남은 일은 미뤄두고 지날밖에 / 悠悠餘外且安之 라 하였으니, 자못 감개가 깊다. 공이 젊어서 옥당(玉堂)에 있을 적에 이백생(李伯生 백생은 이순인(李純仁)의 자)ㆍ최가운(崔嘉運 가운은 최경창(崔慶昌)의 자)ㆍ하대이(河大而 대이는 하응림(河應臨)의 자) 의 무리들이 함께 당운(唐韻)을 숭상하여 대궐안의 소도(小桃)를 두고 읊어 작품이 꽤 많았는데 공이 이에 화운하기를 무수한 궁중 꽃은 흰 담장에 기댔는데 / 無數宮花倚粉牆 벌 나비는 노닐며 남은 향을 좇아가네 / 游蜂戲蝶趁餘香 늙은이는 봄바람을 채 보지 못하고 / 老翁不及春風看 속절없이 태양을 향하는 해바라기 마음이로세 / 空有葵心向太陽 라 하였다. 이처럼 함축된 뜻이 심원하고 조사(措辭)가 기한(奇悍)하니 시를 하면 마땅히 이와 같이 해야 되지 않겠는가? 부드러운 것 고운 것 바람 꽃 따위를 읊은 시는 오히려 그 중후한 맛을 상하게 하는 것이다.
The day I departed to take office in Suan prefecture, Hwanghae province, Hwang Chŏnguk presented the following poem to me, 詩才突兀行間出官況蹉跎分外奇摠是人生各有命悠悠餘外且安之 Your poetic talent towers high above the ranks.Your career, so peculiarly, has been full of slips.In the end, each has his own fate.Leave the many things for another day, and let us be content. The poem is truly full of emotion (kamgae). When Hwang was young and was at the Office of Special Advisors (Hongmun’gwan), Yi Sunin, Ch’oe Kyŏngch’ang and Ha Ŭngnim and the like all esteemed Tang style poetry (tangun) and wrote poems on the peach trees in the palace. Many poems were composed, and Hwang wrote a poem in response, which said, 無數宮花倚粉牆游蜂戲蝶趁餘香老翁不及春風看空有葵心向太陽 Copious flowers in the palace lean on white-washed walls.Roaming bees and playing butterflies chase the delicate scent.The old man arrived too late to see the spring breeze.His sunflower heart only looks to the sun. The implied meaning (hamŭi) is profound and lasting (simwŏn), and the diction (chosa) is unique and bold (kihan). Shouldn’t any poem be like this? A poem about ornamental (kiryŏ) scenery, on the contrary, will weaken its richness (hu).
