English Translation
Because his children lived in Hwasun county, Chŏlla province, my late father became friends with local Literary Licentiate (chinsa) Kim Yun 金潤 (16th century). He often praised Kim’s poems. Once an Army Commander (pyŏngma chŏltosa) built a tower named Chillam and invited Kim to compose a long poem to record the occasion. Under the influence of wine, Kim wielded his brush and completed sixty sentences. The opening sentence said, Ten-thousand-catty rainbow beams press down on Vermilion Bird.On the dragon tablet is the sword dance of Lady Gongsun. This is a masterpiece (kŏlchak). Once, while traveling on water, Kim’s boat broke down. Scarcely reaching the shore, he ascended a pavilion and wrote a poem, which said, My robe and cap were all lost in the wild current.Still this body remains, a gift from my parents.Once again I ascend the tall pavilion and behold the clear scenery.Autumn mountain and light blue sky enter a new poem. The poem’s great charm (koch’wi) is manifest. Only after sixty years of age did he pass the civil examination and was given a position of Ceremonial Apprentice (chaerang) as a Scholar in Reclusion (yuil), but he did not take office.
