Because of his literary talent, Ch’oe Rip was sent to China to present queries as Enquirer (chilchŏnggwan). He went to Beijing the second time because of the issue of clarifying the royal lineage. A poem by Hwang Chŏnguk presented to him reads, 萬里之行一可已五年於此再何堪官仍質正亦推重事是疑誣須熟諳落筆文章妙天下當關虎豹許朝參歸來寶典昭星日看取聲名北斗南 As for ten thousand-li journey, one is enough. It’s only been five years, so how can you endure another one?Yet your position is Enquirer, and you’re also highly regarded.Your mission is clarifying the error, which you must be skilled at.Putting the brush on paper, your writing will amaze all under Heaven.Tigers and leopards guarding the gate will allow you a morning audience with emperor. When you return, the precious decree will shine brightly like the sun and the stars. All will see your fame from the Northern to Southern Dippers. People say this is an excellent (ka) poem, but its poetic form (kyŏngnyul) is inelegant (pur’a). |
