Seeing the perilous events of his time, Na Sik 羅湜 (1498–1546; sobriquet Changŭmjŏng [Slow Chanting Pavilion]) did not seek office again. When the calamity of the note on the wall in the chŏngmi year overtook, both he and his brother First Counselor (pujehak) Na Suk 羅淑 (d. 1546) could not escape it. He once wrote the following poem on “Listening to a Shaman’s Chant” 聞儺. Shaman’s drum rumbles, “boom, boom,” shaking the four gates.Rushing to the east, chasing to the west, such is her powerful commotion. Year after year, I hear your useless chant with white painted face. From this country, have you ever driven out a ghost? The last line seems to contain his message, but the expression and meaning (ŏŭi) are too revealing (ro). It would have been difficult for him to avoid the calamity.
