Studying the poetry and prose of the pastis like pounding millets with a dagger. New achievements in brush and ink are like a sacrifice of fish by otters.According to the Xunzi 荀子, “Not conveying the ritually proper message and using poetry and prose to do it is akin to using a dagger to pound millets.” Regarding Li Shangyi’s writing method, an ancient book commented that when composing Li laid out numerous reference books like how otters lay out their fish from left to right before consuming them. I said, “Writing that regards weaving together references (yongsa) as a talent, there lies the poet’s disease. Recently, Chŏng Saryong and his likes plagiarized all books and filled big pockets. Every time they write, they must borrow from elsewhere. That is why their poems show many axe and chisel marks from citing and patching up. There is certainly no calm (p’yŏngon) air (kisang) in their poems probably because they are also suffering from this disease.” |
