Koryŏ’s Third Inspector (changnyŏng) Sŏ Kyŏn, after the change of dynasty, lived in Kŭmch’ŏn and did not take office. His poem reads, 千載神都隔渺茫忠良濟濟佐明王統三為一功安在卻恨前朝業不長 The thousand-year divine capital is separated by vast expanses. Many loyal and virtuous ministersaided the enlightened king. Where is the achievement of unifying the Three Kingdoms? I lament how past dynasties’ achievements cannot last. The Office of the Inspector-General (taegan) wanted to punish him but King T’aejo said, “As a former official of Koryŏ, Sŏ Kyŏn wrote a poem in its memory. This follows the tradition of Boyi and Shuqi and therefore should be rewarded and not punished.” |
