A kisaeng is in gloom at Swallow Tower. Her courtier has departed, and she sadly dreams on.“Oh, you guests then and there! Stop blaming my age!The fair ladies who were at the tower Are now silver-haired!”Sŭngp’yŏng was present-day Sunch’ŏn prefecture in Chŏlla province. When Chang was Assistant Prefect (p’an’gwan) there, Prefect (t’aesu) Son Ŏk 孫億 (1214–1259) had tender feelings for official kisaeng Hoho 好好 (13th century). They say when Chang returned to the place later on a mission, Hoho was already old. The courtier refers to Son Ŏk. Coming again as a magistrate, I still have dark eyes. But since our parting, the fair lady has become a silvery head. This, too, conveys the same meaning (ŭi). |
