When Ch’a Ch’ŏllo died, Yu Kŭn 柳根 (1449–1527; sobriquet Sŏgyŏng [Western Suburb]) wrote a eulogy poem with the following couplet, The works of Laozi, Zhuangzi and Sima Qian, he especially read a lot.The poetry of Li Bai, Du Fu, and Han Yu, he was fully familiar with. Although these are facts, the information is not comprehensive for a eulogy. Ch’a was broadly learned, and the books he read and was familiar with did not stop with books of those kinds. So I also wrote a eulogy poem that said, When the sword was lost at Yanping Ferry, Heaven withheld its colors. When the tortoise of Yuanqiao Island died, Earth lost its spirit. It also said, 詞林浩氣三春盡學海長波一夕乾 The noble spirit in the poetry circle was exhausted after three springs. The great waters in the sea of scholarship dried up in one night. When Yu Kŭn saw them, he said, “The words (ŏ) in these verses adequately describe Ch’a.” Certainly, Yu was not someone who did not know Ch’a.
