桂娘者。扶安賤唱。自號梅窓。嘗有過客。聞其名。以詩挑之。娘卽次韻曰。平生不學食東家。只愛梅窓月影斜。詞人未識幽閒意。指點行雲枉自多。其人悵然而去。娘平日喜琴與詩。死而琴殉葬云
계랑은 부안의 기생인데 스스로 매창이라 호를 지었다. 일찍이 한 나그네가 그녀의 이름을 듣고 시를 지어 희롱하였다. 계랑이 즉시 차운하기를, ""라 하였다. 그 사람이 기뻐하지 않으며 떠나갔다. 계랑은 평소 거문고와 시를 좋아하였으며, 죽을 적에 거문고를 같이 묻었다 한다.
Kyeryang 桂娘 (1573–1610), a lowborn kisaeng in Puan county in Chŏlla province, called herself by her sobriquet Maech’ang (Plum by the Window). Once a traveler who had heard of her fame challenged her with a poem. She immediately responded in a matching rhyme. 平生不學食東家只愛梅窗月影斜詞人未識幽閑意指點行雲枉自多 All my life I never learnedto live a life of a vagabond. I only loved the plum tree by the window shining under the moonlight.People of literary talents do not know the meaning of my intent of quiet idleness. They point at passing clouds so many in vain. Upset, the man left. She always delighted in the zither and poetry, and it is said she was buried together with her zither.
