According to the Tongin sihwa (Easterners’ Remarks on Poetry): “In the last years of Koryŏ, a monk presented a poem to Chŏng Mongju. Over ten thousand li of Kangnam wild blossoms are in bloom.Where there is spring breeze, how can there be no nice mountain?” and he hoped Chŏng would retire from public life. With tears streaming down, Chŏng said, ‘Alas! It’s too late.’ As an official who had been faithful to the king, he had no intention to retire. How could a monk fully understand Chŏng!”
