Entry Text
When Ch’oe Kyŏngch’ang went to Beijing, he passed by the shrine to the famous military general, Ming Garrison Commander Yang Zhao 楊照 (1524–1563). The shrine was in Ningyuan garrison. Ch’oe wrote the following poem, At dusk in Yunzhong, torches light up the mountain.Alone I have already come near the Lutou Pass.By himself the general left leading a thousand.Crossing the Liao River at night, he did not return from the battle. This is a fine poem, but Lutou Pass is not in the Liao and Ji region and the place names, Yunzhong and the Liao River, seem to overlap. Also in the poem “Presented to Paek Kwanghong’s Former Kisaeng” 贈白光弘舊妓, he wrote, 錦繡煙霞依舊色綾羅芳草至今春仙娘去後無消息一曲關西淚滿巾 Silky mists and rosy clouds still wear their old colors.Silken fragrant plants live on to this spring. After the fairy departed, there has been no news. The tune of Kwansŏ soaks my handkerchief. Paek Kwanghong 白光弘 (1522–1556) died while serving as Army Aide (p’yŏngsa) in P’yŏngan province. His work, “Song of Kwansŏ” 關西別曲, is widely sung to this day. “Silky” 錦繡, “mists and rosy clouds” 煙霞, “silken” 綾羅, and “fragrant plants” 芳草 are all expressions (ŏ) from his song.
