| 林斯文云。余曾得一聯曰。天下豈無千里馬。人間難得九方皐。披之山谷集有云。世上豈無千里馬。人中難得九方皐。披之世上劣於天下。披之人中優於人間矣。以愚料之。山谷此語冠絶古今。豈有敵此者乎。得無偶一閱眼忘之。認爲己有者乎。不然而暗合。則可與山谷詩。頡頑於千載之下。 |

| 임 사문(林斯文 임형수(林亨秀)를 말함)이 말하기를,
“내가 일찍이, 천하에 어찌 천리마가 없으리오 / 天下豈無千里馬 인간에 구방 고를 얻기 어렵도다 / 人間難得九方皐 하는 한 연구(聯句)를 얻었는데, 그뒤에 황산곡(黃山谷)의 시집을 보니 거기에, 세상에 어찌 천리마가 없겠는가 / 世上豈無千里馬 사람 가운데 구방 고를 얻기 어렵도다 / 人中難得九方皐 라는 글귀가 있었다. ‘세상’이라 한 것은 나의 ‘천하’보다 못하고, 그의 ‘사람 가운데[人中]’라 한 것은 나의 ‘인간(人間)’보다 낫다.” 하였다. 생각으로는 황산곡의 이 말은 고금에 뛰어났으며, 그후로 어찌 여기에 겨룰 사람이 있겠는가? 그렇지 않고 우연히 합치되었다면 그는 천 년 뒤에 황산곡과 겨룬다 할 수 있다. |

| Scholar Im Hyŏngsu said, “I once wrote the following couplet, 天下豈無千里馬人間難得九方皐 Under Heaven, how could there not be a thousand-li horse?In the mortal world, it is difficult to find Jiufang Gao.Then in the Shanguji 山谷集 (Collected Works of Huang Tingjian), I found a couplet, 世上豈無千里馬人中難得九方皐 In the world, how could there not be a thousand-li horse?Among humans, it is difficult to find Jiufang Gao.Huang’s ‘in the world’ is inferior (ryŏl) to my ‘under Heaven,’ but his ‘among humans’ is more excellent (u) than my ‘in the mortal world.’” In my humble opinion, these expressions by Huang have surpassed many others, both in the past and present. Is there anyone who can rival him? Having read the poem once and forgotten it, how could Im claim these expressions as his own? However, if these lines by Im unintentionally coincided (amhap) with the lines by Huang, then Im’s poem could be passed down for a thousand years, just like Huang’s. |
