趙斯文澄。爲嶺南都事。喜作題詠。鏤板揭壁。詩賦參半。人皆譏之。申斯文義忠。趙之同年友也。書于公廨溷室曰。厠間無拙句。知趙不曾來。申侯以此得名。人皆曰。申之十字。可壓趙之百篇云。 |

사문 조징(趙澄)이 영남 도사(嶺南都事)로 있으면서 제영(題詠)을 즐겨하여 판(板)에 새겨 벽에 걸었는데, 시와 부(賦)가 반반씩 되니 사람들이 기롱하였다. 사문 신의충(申義忠)은 조징과 동년(同年) 친우였다. 공해(公廨) 변소에 다음과 같이 적었다.
측간에 졸구가 없는 것 보니 / 厠間無拙句 조가 아직 안 온 것을 알겠도다 / 知趙不曾來 신후(申侯 후(侯)는 원이라는 뜻)는 이것으로 이름이 났다. 사람들이 모두 말하기를, “신(申)의 10자가 조(趙)의 백 편을 누를 수 있다.” 하였다. |
English Translation |

When Cho Ching 趙澄 (1511–1570) was Assistant Governor (tosa) of Kyŏngsang province, he enjoyed writing poetry. He engraved his poems on plaques and displayed them on walls, and people all made fun of him. Sin Ŭich’ung 申義忠 (16th century) wrote in the latrine in the government building, 厠間無拙句知趙不曾來 No awkward poetic lines in the latrine—I know Cho has not been here. Official Sin later became famous for this. People all said, “These ten characters by Sin can crush a hundred poems by Cho.” |
