古今天使文章有高下。僕品題於湖陰。祁順爲首。倪謙董越次之。金湜七言律極好。張寧似爲未熟云。公常咏董圭峯降雨釀寒來樹杪。嶺雲分瞑落山阿之句。稱譽者不一。

Korean Translation
고금 중국 사신의 시를 고하(高下)에 대해 평한 이가 없었다. 내가 호음(湖陰)에게 품평을 청하니, ‘기순(祈順)이 제일이요, 예겸(倪謙)ㆍ동월(董越)이 다음이요, 김식(金湜)은 칠언 율시(七言律詩)가 극히 좋고, 장영(張寧)은 좀 미숙한 것같다.’ 하였다. 공은 일찍이 동규봉(董圭峯 동월(董越))의, 강 비 추위를 빚어 나무 끝에 오고 / 江雨釀寒來樹抄 재 구름 어둠을 나누어 바위 언덕에 떨어진다 / 嶺雲分瞑落巖阿 라는 구를 읊으면서 찬양한 적이 한번만이 아니었다.

English Translation

The imperial envoys from the past until now possessed different levels of literary competence. I asked for Chŏng Saryong’s opinion on this matter. He said, “Qi Shun is the best, followed by Ni Qian and Dong Yue. Jin Shi’s seven-character quatrains are outstanding (kŭkho). Zhang Ning seems not fully mature (misuk).” Chŏng often recited and praised Dong Yue’s couplet, 江雨釀寒來樹杪嶺雲分瞑落山阿 The brewing chill from the river rain reaches the treetops. The splitting darkness from the summit clouds descends upon the mountain hills. Opinions regarding the praise of this couplet varied among people.
