趙寓菴仁奎甫。按節海西時。有人愛妓惜別。寓菴贈一絶曰。心似貪花蝶。身如渡塞鴻。泣川添別淚。流向海門東。泣川川名也。鄭湖陰見之。不覺屈膝曰。下聯氣力尤奇健。文章全體。盖在於此。林塘云。

English Translation

1. When Cho In’gyu 趙仁奎 (c. 1533; sobriquet Uam [Homey Hut]) was appointed as Superintendent (anch’alsa) of Haesŏ, he bid farewell to a kisaeng he loved and presented her with the following quatrain, 心似貪花蝶身如渡塞鴻泣川添別淚流向海門東 My heart is like a butterfly desiring flowers.My body is like a goose crossing the frontier.Weeping River add to tears at parting,flowing east into the sea. The Weeping River (Ŭp River) is the name of a river. According to Chŏng Yugil, when Chŏng Saryong read this quatrain, he was compelled to get on his knees, saying, “The second couplet is vigorous (kiryŏk), unique, and robust (kigŏn). All the qualities of different writing styles (ch’e) are present in these lines.”
