Original Text

English Translation
1. When Gong Yongqing visited as an envoy, Chŏng Saryong served as the Welcoming Official (wŏnjŏpsa) and Yi Hŭibo as the Pacification Commissioner (sŏnwisa). Matching the envoy’s poem, Yi wrote, Under the sun, your great fame spreads north and south like the Big Dipper. At the sky’s end, we drink the wine of farewell from the jade cup of east and west. The imperial envoy said, “This poem is beautiful. In response to this poem, I will treat you with special courtesy.” Whenever Yi greeted Gong, the envoy came down from his chair and received him, which made Yi quite proud. When I told this to Chŏng, he said, “The couplet was not his. In fact, it came from my hands.” This reflects the competition for fame among literati. Fair ladies spread north and south like the Big Dipper.Fine wine fills the jade cup of east and west. Yi’s poem merely changes a few words, so to speak highly of it would be like praising the words like “misty” 漠漠 and “shady” 陰陰. How could Gong have not read Huang’s poem?
