1. When Chŏng Saryong was in Kangwŏn province on an official mission, he wrote poems everywhere he went, which later became the Kwandong illok (Daily Records from Kwandong).Later, when I was attending to him, I came across the following lines in his poem “An Early Departure from Kwangnŭng” 廣陵早發. I lean in and listen to a wild rooster.Where does it crow?Guarding me in my sleep, the candles burn through daybreak. I asked Chŏng, “What kind of rooster is a wild rooster?” He explained, “It refers to a rooster in a desolate village.” I replied, “According to the Yin yang shu 陰陽書 (Book of Yin and Yang), a rooster that crows in midnight is called a “wild rooster.” When it crows, there will be a great debacle in the world. In the past, when Zu Ti 祖逖 (266–321) heard a rooster’s crow in the middle of the night, he kicked Liu Kun 劉琨 (271–318), who woke up and said, “This is not an ominous sound. Because the midnight crow of a rooster had been an ominous sound, and we say it is not, if a debacle strikes the world, the two of us would be able to make some meritorious achievements.” Chŏng said, “That is right,” and he ordered the scribe to change the word “wild” to “village.” Recently, Chŏng’s two sons printed his literary collection, and in it, the poem still contains the word “wild.” I am unsure why they did not include the revised version.
