1. Nam Hyoon wrote “Biographies of Six Martyred Ministers” 六臣傳. According to the “Biography of Yi Kae” 李塏傳”: When the carriage arrived to take him to the execution ground, Yi wrote the following poem, When King Yu’s tripod cauldrons were important, life, too, held significance.Where it is as light as a goose feather, even death is an honor.I could not sleep till dawn, and now I depart through the city gate. The pines and cedars of Munjong's mausoleum are lush in my dream. According to the “Biography of Pak P’aengnyŏn 朴彭年傳”: When King Sejo was Chief State Councilor (yŏngŭijŏng), at a court banquet at Kŭnjŏngjŏn, Pak composed the following poem, Deep inside the royal court, a heart-rending music of strings rings.Myriad matters of these daysare truly incomprehensible. Over the green willows, the east windblows gently, gently.Illuminating the flowers, the spring sun moves slowly, slowly. The achievements of the former kingsare locked in golden chests. The sagely sovereign’s new favor overflows in jade cups. How can we not be joyous, and for how long? Songs of celebration and poems of drunken bliss continue during the era of Great Peace. The “Biography of Sŏng Sammun” 成三問傳 includes the following annotation by an unidentified person: When the carriage arrived to take him to the execution ground, Sŏng wrote the following poem, 擊鼓催人命回看日欲斜黃泉無一店今日宿誰家 The pounding drum presses for my life.Turning around, I see the sun is about to set.In the Yellow Springs, there is not a single inn.Today, at whose house will I spend the night? However, in the Jinxian huiyan (Assembled Words of Modern Writings), I came across the following account:Sun Kui 孫蕢 (14th century), a leading disciple of Song Lian 宋濂 (1310–1381), was incriminated and faced punishment. Sun recited a prophetic poem. The pounding of the alligator drum speeds up.Over the western hill, the sun sets once more.In the Yellow Springs, there is not a single inn.Tonight, at whose house will I spend the night? Based on this, it becomes evident that the poem was not originally written by Sŏng. It must be an error made by the annotator.
