1. According to Nam Hyoon’s account of Kim Koengp’il 金宏弼 (1454–1504; sobriquet Hanwŏndang [Hall of Cold and Warm Seasons]), when Kim studied under Kim Chongjik, he demonstrated exceptional demeanors. Even in ordinary times, he always dressed formally. He stayed up late at night while others were asleep and rose at the crowing of the rooster. He never put down the Xiaoxue 小學 (Elementary Learning) from his hands. When asked about state affairs, he always replied, “I am a child who is studying the Xiaoxue. How could I understand the grand principles?” Only after reaching the age of thirty did he begin to read other books. The older he grew, the loftier his Way became. Understanding keenly that the world cannot be restored and the Way cannot be realized, he concealed his talents and went into seclusion. However, his reputation still spread among the people. When Kim Chongjik became the Second Minister of Personnel (Ijo ch’amp’an) but did not offer any recommendations on state affairs, Kim Koengp’il presented the following poem to him, The Way lies in wearing a fur coat in winter and drinking icy water in summer.Moving when the sky is clear and halting when it rains, isn’t this all so great!Even the orchid, when mingling with the worldly, will eventually change.Who would believe when you tell the oxen to plough and horses to carry? Kim Chongjik then responded with a matching rhyme poem. Going beyond my lot, I have reached a position that grants access to the ice storage.Rectifying the lord and saving the people, how am I capable of such? Mocked by a younger generation for my foolishness, the position of power and wealth, so trivial, is not worth pursuing. From this point on, Kim Koengp’il became dissatisfied with Kim Chongjik.
