諺以春雨數來。石墻飽腹。沙鉢缺耳。老人潑皮。小兒捷口。僧人醉酒。泥佛渡川。家母手鉅。食簞有聲。爲無用之事。柳大容嘗戲採此語贈余詩曰。石墻飽腹眞無用。稚子能言亦匪賢。不願如今春雨數。願君家母手如椽。是春適多雨。故接句云。

English Translation

1. Proverbs such as “Rains are frequent in spring,” “Stone walls fill their bellies,” “A ceramic bowl with chipped teeth,” “Old man is thick-skinned,” “A sharp-tongued child,” “A drunken monk,” “A clay Buddha crossing the river,” “A mother with huge hands,” and “A wicker bowl making sound” are considered useless things. Yu Taeyong 柳大容 (16th century) once gathered these proverbs for fun and presented them to me in a poem. 石墻飽腹眞無用稚子能言亦匪賢不願如今春雨數願君家母手如椽 A stone wall fills its belly with utterly useless things.An eloquent child likewise is not commendable. I do not wish for, like today, frequent spring rains,but wish your mother’s hands be like the rafters. Because there were lots of rains that spring, he combined the lines together.
