Having received a purple ink slab from the Vermilion City Summit as a gift from the Japanese monk Ten’yū 天佑 (14th century), Yi Sungin expressed his gratitude by presenting two poems to him. The first poem reads, Atop the spirit mountain by the sea stands the Vermilion City Summit, where the precious aura within mountainilluminates the sky.The venerable monk carved the Sheep Liver stone, and bestowed it upon me from the eastern Han, a scholar of brush and ink.The second poem reads, With its texture like fatty tissues, the stone needs not whetting. Its ink pool is surrounded with stone eyes, like speckles of shining stars. Dipping my brush in ink, I dare touse my unimpressive handwritingto copy the entire volume of the Lankāvatāra Sūtra.
