錦南文詞簡古。而詩則非其所長。然嘗讀宋鑑作絶句云。桃燈掇讀便長吁。天地間無一丈夫。三百年來中國土。如何付與老單于。讀此詩者。咸歎其慷慨奮厲之氣。

English Translation

1. Ch’oe Pu’s 崔溥 (1454–1504) writings were pithy and elegant (kan’go), but poetry was not his strong suit. On one occasion, while reading the Song shi quan wen 宋史全文 (History of the Song: A Complete Text), he composed the following quatrain, 挑燈撤讀便長吁天地間無一丈夫千百年來中國土如何付與老單于 Raising the lamp’s wick, I pause my readingand let out a long sigh.Between heaven and earth, there was nota single true man.The hundreds of thousands of years old land of China,how was it handed over to the old Xiongnu king? All who read this poem praised his vehemence and indignation.
