| 正德己巳年間。有三嘉縣令。忘其姓名者。政頗貪酷。適病死將發柩。邑人貼詩於柩首曰。冥間五鬼虐烝民。帝使天羅殺毒身。從此閭閻愁怨絶。堯天舜日太平春。觀察使聞之曰。縣令固非矣。爲邑人者亦未爲得也。令訪捕作詩者。竟未獲。按此詩雖不工。亦可爲貪黷者之戒矣。 |

| 정덕 기사년(1509, 중종 4) 무렵에 삼가 현령(三嘉縣令)이 있었는데, 그 성명을 잊어버렸으나 정사(政事)가 자못 탐혹(貪酷)하였다. 마침 병으로 죽어 관(棺)을 내어 발인하려고 하는데, 고을 사람이 관머리에 시를 써 붙이기를,
저승의 다섯 귀신이 뭇 백성을 학대하니 / 冥間五鬼虐烝民 염라대왕이 천라를 시켜 악독한 몸을 죽였구나 / 帝使天羅殺毒身 이제부터는 백성들의 시름과 원한이 끊겼으니 / 從此閭閻愁怨絶 요순시대의 태평한 봄 이로다 / 堯天舜日太平春 하였다. 관찰사가 그 말을 듣고, “현령이 참으로 나쁘다. 그러나 읍인(邑人)도 잘못하였다.” 하고, 그 시를 지은 자를 찾아서 잡으라고 하였으나 끝내 잡지 못하였다. 이 시를 살펴보건대, 비록 잘 짓지는 못했으나 재물을 탐하고 독직(瀆職)하는 자의 경계가 될 만하다. |

| 1. In the kisa year during the reign of Zhengde (1509; Chungjong 4), there was a magistrate in Samga county in Kyŏngsang province. I cannot recall his name, but he was corrupt and cruel in governance. He fell ill and died. When his coffin was about to depart for the burial site, a county man posted a poem on the front of the coffin, 冥間五鬼虐烝民帝使天羅殺毒身從此閭閻愁怨絶堯天舜日太平春 The Five Demons from the underworld tormented the people,and God threw a net from Heaven and killed the venomous one!Henceforth, the villagers’ worries and resentments will end.Under Yao’s sky and Shun’s sun, there will be the springtime of Great Peace. When the governor (kwanch’alsa) heard this, he said, “The magistrate was certainly wrong, but the county man who wrote the poem also was not right either.” He ordered an investigation and the arrest of the poet but could not capture him in the end. As for the poem, although it is not refined (kong), it nevertheless serves as a warning for corrupt officials. |
