According to Yi Haeng’s poem “Ascending the Hill behind the School. On the green hills under the moon tonightis a white-haired man who is the same person from years ago.Seasons come and go,yet the vista is new each day.Partings must be the principle in all things, but a laugh also is natural. My servant boy can prop me up if I get drunk.Don’t ask me how many times our wine cups have been passed. At the time, Chŏng was about to travel far, so Yi wrote the phrase “Partings must be the principle in all things” in the Yongjae chip 容齋集 (Collected Works of Yongjae). But the Ch’ungam chip 冲庵集 (Collected Works of Ch’ungam), compiled by Hŏ Paekki 許伯琦 (1493–1563; sobriquet Samsong [Three Pines]), also contains the poem. When Chŏng saw this, he said, “The two gentlemen’s poetic styles are different. If Hŏ thought the poem was by Kim, he clearly did not understand poetry.”
