1. The Naval Commander (chŏmsa) of Manp’o always gathered grass from the territory of the Manchu land and used it in his barracks. In the ŭlyu year of the Jiajing reign (1525; Chungjong 20), Sim Sason 沈思遜 (1493–1528) received a special appointment as Naval Commander due to his skills in military strategy. In the first month of the muja year (1528; Chungjong 23), following the old practice, he led the soldiers to gather grass. All the soldiers scattered in four directions to work, leaving only two or three military officers and eight or nine soldiers sitting in a small tent they had set up. Then, four or five Manchus came to visit him. Seeing that he was unprotected, they drew their swords and attacked him directly. Sim quickly mounted his horse, but the horse ran off, causing him to fall. He was brutally murdered, and the Hu men stripped him of his clothes and went away. In his eulogy, Yi Haeng wrote, In public affairs, even the sages were fearful. Why then were you so careless with your body? You, with many talents, should have cherished yourself. How is it right to befriend a foreign race? When the country was without troubles,in the sky appeared the rebel constellation. Am I weeping idly for myself? The pain of mourning weighs down the palace.
