1. In the kabo year of the Jiajing reign (1534; Chungjong 29), So Seyang went to Beijing as an envoy to express congratulations (chinhasa). A group of Chinese officials presented two of his poems, “Visiting the Confucius Shrine” 謁文廟 and “Impromptu” 卽事, to the supervisor on duty and to Minister Xia Yan 夏言 (1482–1548). After reading the poems, Xia remakred, “I should have known that you had this talent, so you would be given special attention,” and presented So with a copy of his own poetry collection. Upon his return, So reported the event. Censor General (taesagan) Yi Im 李任 (16th century) commented on the report, saying, “So recklessly showed off his terrible (ak) poems in China. Please investigate this fault.” King Chungjong, however, did not heed the request. So’s poem “Visiting the Confucius Shrine” reads, Rising in the morning, donning my robe and cap, I pay homage to the Uncrowned King. The Tune of Great Peace rings with a joyous echo.Virtuous and honorable! Without end,we offer you sacrifices for a thousand years. How great is your Way! It’s difficult to peerover your walls towering many yards high. On the altar, pink apricot blossomshave fallen about half. In the courtyard, green cypresses stand in lines. My whole life, I could only sing the Song of the Swan Geese. But today, I gently caress the side of the Stone Drums. The welcome and farewell banquet lasted for ten days.Three months in the imperial city, yet I have not returned.Willow catkins are as white as my greying sideburns.Peach blossoms are ruddier than fair ladies’ cheeks.Feeling melancholy with spring blues, I linger in the empty lodge, while the joy of returning dancesto my mountains of home.Sooner or later, when my official duties are complete,I will brush off my robe and whistle, as I pass through the Qin Pass. I notice that Minister Xia saw these poems by chance. Isn't it an exaggeration to say that So was trying to show off his poems in China? Because Minister Xia approved them and even presented So with a copy of his own poetry, I am afraid that the minister could not have considered them terrible (ak) poems.
