Not only was Yi Simwŏn 李深源 (1454–1504), Third Secretary (pujŏng) of Chugye in Chŏlla province, skilled in explaining Neo-Confucian teachings, but he was also a capable poet. His poem “An Evening View after Rain” 雨後晚望 reads, 一犁春雨杏花殘處處人耕白水間獨立蒼茫江海上不勝怊悵望三山 As spring rains sweep by, apricot blossoms fall.Everywhere, people plow in the white water.Alone, I stand above the vast rivers and seas.Overcome with sorrow, I gaze at the three mythical mountains. The shade of trees, dense and light, spreads over the rocky mounds.A winding path meanders, passing through a tortuous valley.Faint fragrances of plum blossoms reach my nostrils, letting me know that in the distant woods, there are lingering flowers.
