In the year of muo (1498), Cho Wi (sobriquet Maegye [Plum Stream]) went to Beijing as an imperial birthday envoy (sŏngjŏlsa). Upon returning to Liaodong, he heard about an event in the eighth month. Since it was an unpredictable event, everyone became fearful. I visited a fortune teller in Liaodong named Ju Yuanjie 鄒源潔 (15th century), to foretell my future, and he responded with a poem. From a thousand waves, you will free yourself. Then under a rock, you will spend three nights. Upon my return, I was able to defend my case and avoid being exiled to a distant place. However, I never figured out the meaning of the second line of the poem. Alas! How could I have foreseen the tragedy of the mid-winter of the kapcha year’? O, how very sorrowful!
