Original Text

1. Kim Chongjik’s poem written while stranded at Chŭngyak station because of rain reads, At Chŭngyak station,it’s been raining for three days.At midnight in the year of musul, I hear a crashing sound of thunder.Unable to leave, I sit, dressed in my official robe and cap. How can I bear hunger, cold, and thirst, coming all at once? The sprouting of winter barley brings me true comfort. But returning geese soaked in rain also make me sad.Tomorrow morning, on horseback, I will gaze upon peach and apricot blossoms. They should be more beautiful than those that made the Third Gentleman beat his drums. He also wrote “The Rain on the Day of the Cold Food Festival” 寒食日雨. Stop boasting about coming home with heaps of official seals! For sparrows and rats abound, so I dare not peep!At forty-seven, my hair is white as snow.A hundred and five days after winter solstice, rain falls like strands of silk.By the pond, cold swallows have just found their nests.Outside the balcony, a resilient plum tree suddenly bud. Who came to the empty houseand pulled the bell rope?Have you, sir, just come to ask for a spring poem? The opening couplet of the first poem and the second couplet of the second poem both use skewed words, but overall the language is balanced (t’ach’ŏp) and does not feel excessive.
