A former palace lady had a box in which she stored cut pieces of unusual writings, including, From a hidden pavilion, I watch the flowing waters.Tall trees overlook the murmuring stream.Fine horses neigh amidst the green grasses.Spring is within the azure hills. Cliffs stand a thousand-yard tall. The winds through the pines echo without end.Leaning on the balustrade, thoughts are boundless.Autumn must have arrived to the mountains of my homeland. The first bite of a fresh melon, crystal cold. With brotherly affection, how can I taste it alone? I ask you, my brother, how have you spent your years?I imagine playing the water sound on the zitherand singing the Song of the Wei River? After promising to meet with relatives,I’ve invited fine kisaeng.Although our duty is that of a king and a minister, our friendship is that of brothers. Those who saw these writings believed them to be scraps of papers that King Sŏngjong playfully scribbled and discarded. The two quatrains appear to be poems accompanying paintings, but their authors are unknown. The rest are all short drafts by Grand Prince Wŏlsan (1454–1488). King Sŏngjong often invited Grand Prince Wŏlsan to gatherings with music. When they were apart, they exchanged poems in letters without missing a day. Ah! How very sincere was their brotherly love!
