1. Ch’oe Ch’ŏnsun崔天順 (15th century), a teacher from my hometown, took the local civil service examination in the spring of kimyo (1459), together with the classics licentiate Yi Sukhwang 李淑璜 (1441–1486), Hŏ Sun 許詢 (15th century), and Yi Chongju 李從周 (15th century). Riding on his horseback, Ch’oe suddenly had a dream, in which he saw drooping willow branches swaying in the wind over his horse’s head. When he awoke, he found it strange and told the dream to his companions. Hŏ said, “Drooping willow branches resemble the green canopy of a Chief Minister. Your dream is a rare one, and I must buy it.” Ch’oe replied, “A good omen is fixed. How can you buy it?” Indeed, Ch’oe was successful in the local examination. Later, Ch’oe traveled to the capital with Kim Chongjik to take the state civil service examination. Ch’oe said to Kim, “You have outstanding talent, so you must earn a high score. I do not wish to ride on your coattail to success.” Kim replied, “In the past, Sun Jin 孫僅 (969–1017) and his younger brother Sun He 孫何 (961–1004) both took the civil service examination. The older brother won first place and the younger brother came in second. How do you know that the two of us won’t be like Jin and He?” Then Kim composed a quatrain. On the pond, green grasses bear many traces of rain.People say that the two of us are Jin and He.Don’t be upset that Di’s homesees spring arrive late. All over the city, peach treeshave yet to fully blossom. On their way, they met an itinerant monk who walked ahead of them, holding up a round bamboo hat with his cane, resembling a canopy. Kim remarked, “This too is an auspicious sign.” Bantering together, they continued their way. In the end, they both passed the examination that year. |
