今之稱及第爲先達。未知從何時而然泰齋酬趙壯元瑞康詩曰。憶昔同遊在兩京。君爲後進我先生。如何今日還先達。却使先生仰盛名。

1. Today, people refer to those who pass the civil service examination as “reaching there first (sŏndal 先達).” I am unsure when this expression originated.A poem by Yu Pangsŏn 柳方善 (1388–1443; sobriquet T’aejae [Peaceful Studio]) titled “Presented to Primus Cho Sŏgang 趙瑞康 (d. 1444)” 酬趙壯元瑞康 says, 憶昔同遊在兩京君爲後進我先生如何今日還先達却使先生仰盛名 I reminisce about our past travelsto the two capitals.You were then a junior,and I a senior.How is it that today you return as one who reached there first,causing me, a senior, to admire your great fame?
