子挺亡後三年壬寅。高熙之夢見子挺於曠漠之野。相與酬唱如生平。子挺問。伯恭。宗之安在。高曰。已上寺肄業矣。子挺不悅。即成。一詩。付高以遺二人曰。文章富貴總如雲。何須勞苦讀書勤。但當得錢沽酒飲。世間人事不須云。高覺而記之。遺予。予時罔知其意。後十年。復命然後覺之。

Korean Translation

English Translation

1. In the year of imin (1482), three years after the death of An Ŭngse’s 安應世 (styled Chajŏng; 1455–1480), Ko Sun (styled Hŭiji) had a dream where he encountered An in an open field. The two exchanged poems just as they had done in life. An asked, “Where are Cho Sin (styled Paekkong) and Hŏ Chong 許琮 (styled Chongji; 1434–1494)?” Ko replied, “They are already at a monastery, studying for civil service examination.” Unpleased with the response, An quickly completed a poem and requested Ko to deliver it to the two of them. The poem read, 文章富貴總如雲何須勞苦讀書勤但當得錢沽酒飲世間人事不須云 Writings, riches, and honor are like clouds after all.So why should you toil and study with such dedication?All you need is enough money to buy wine for drinking.Human affairs of this world—let’s not talk about that.Ko woke up, recorded the poem, and sent it to me. At that time, I did not understand the poem’s meaning (ŭi). Ten year later, after I regained my true self, I came to realize its meaning.”
