按牧隱集。公以洪武己巳十二月被謫出居長湍。庚午四月又論前事。付處咸昌。八月到咸昌寄三峯詩曰。世利秋毫小。交情粥面濃。任敎中齟齬。百折水流東。壬申四月又貶出。居江外矜川。寄松軒詩曰。儻賜山中郡。安心送夕陽。猶望乞郡送老。六月又居驢興甓寺。有泛舟至鸕鷀嚴等詩。詩至於此寄省郞諸兄十二絶。皆極悽惋感怨之思。有云。聞說三郞方被劾。奈何天也奈何天。又云。白頭身世付長湍。又云。官途古今足危機。何恠衰年惹是非。再拜聖恩天地大。萬山殘雪掩柴扉。又。玄陵策上甲加寅。放牓辛朝始出身。坐數至今荒野去。滿庭靑紫絶無人。似言甲寅科之人。以出辛朝。貶出不在也。又。促敗老翁唯四字。黜僧還恐似王輪。又云。松軒當國我流離。夢裡何曾有此思。倚托深矣。又云。彈文直欲殺無赦。尙幸並生天地間。似指三峰。太祖嘗就李穡。問其字及居室名。穡取桂花秋皎潔。字之曰仲潔。配桂莫如松。公所重者節義也。故扁其居曰松軒云云。太祖崇儒重道。素厚牧老。牧老晩年遭謗狼狽。幾至阽危而卒保全之者。豈非素厚之力也歟。
목은집을 참고하면, 공이 홍무 기사년(1389) 12월에 폄적되어 장단에 거주하게 되었다. 경오년(1390) 4월에 다시 앞의 일로 논죄되어 함창에 안치되었다. 8월에 함창에 도착하여 삼봉 정도전에게 보낸 시에서 말하기를 ""라 하였다. 임신년(1392) 4월에 또 폄출되어 강외의 금천에 거주했다. 송헌 이성계에게 보낸 시에서 말하기를 "" 여전히 고을 원을 얻어서 노년을 보내기를 바란 것이다. 6월에 또 여흥의 신륵사에 거주하며, "" 와 같은 시를 지었다. 이 시는 이에 그쳤으나, '성낭 제형에게 12수 절구를 보내다'에서는 모두 극도로 처량하고 원망하는 생각이 있다. "", 또 "", 또 "", 또 ""라 하였으니, 갑인년 과거의 사람들이 우왕 때에 출사하였다 하여 폄출되고 남아 있지 않음을 말한 듯하다. 또 "", 또 ""라 하였으니, 의탁한 뜻이 깊었다. 또 ""라 하였으니 이는 정도전을 가리키는 듯하다. 태조가 일찍이 이색에게 나아가 그의 자와 거실명을 물었다. 색이 "계수나무꽃이 가을에 희고 깨끗하다(桂花秋皎潔)"를 취하여 자를 중결(仲潔)이라 했다. 또 "계수나무의 짝으로는 소나무와 같은 것이 없다(配桂莫如松)"라 하였고, 공이 중하게 여기는 것은 절의였으므로 고로 그 거처를 송헌이라 편액했다고 한다. 태조가 유학을 숭상하고 도를 중히 여겨 평소 이색을 후하게 대했다. 이색이 만년에 비방을 당해 곤란을 겪고 거의 위험에 이르렀으나 끝내 보전할 수 있었던 것은 어찌 평소 태조가 후하게 대우하여 준 힘이 아니겠는가.
According to the Mogŭn chip 牧隐集 (Collected Works of Mogŭn), Yi Saek was exiled to Changdan in November of the kisa year of the Hongwu reign (1389; Kongyang 1). In the fourth month of the kyŏngo year, his case was re-examined, and he was moved to Hamch’ang. Upon arriving in Hamch’ang in the eighth month, he sent the following poem to Chŏng Tojŏn 鄭道傳 (1342–1398; sobriquet Sambong [Three Peaks]). 世利秋毫小交情粥面濃任敎中齟齬百折水流東 Worldly gains are as light as autumn’s down feathers.Our friendship, however, is as strong as fermenting wine. There may have been discord between us, but even if it bends a hundred times, the river still flows east. In the fourth month of the imsin year (1392), he was again exiled, this time to Kŭngch’ŏn. In a poem to Yi Sŏnggye (sobriquet Songhŏn [Pine Terrace]), he wrote, 倘賜山中郡安心送夕陽 If you graciously grant me a prefecture in the mountains,there I shall peacefully see off the setting sun. He was asking for a prefectural position where he could spend his final years. In the sixth month, during his stay at the Brick Monastery in Yŏhŭng, Yi wrote poems such as “Drifting on a Boat to the Cormorant Grotto” 泛舟至鸕鶿巖. His poems ended there. The twelve poems he sent to his brothers all contained his profound sorrow and resentment. For example, he wrote, 聞說三郞方被劾奈何天也奈何天 I heard that my third son had just been impeached.Why, O Heaven! Why, O Heaven!He also wrote, 白頭身世付長湍 A white-haired old man, I was exiled to Changdan.And in another poem, 宦途今古足危機何怪衰年惹是非再拜聖恩天地大萬山殘雪掩柴扉 An official’s road, both present and past, involves ample dangers. What use is there, at this old age, in discussing right and wrong?I express my gratitude once again for the king’s grace as vast as Heaven and Earth.Snow still covers ten thousand mountains, and I close my bramble gate. He also wrote, 玄陵策上甲加寅放牓辛朝始出身坐數至今荒野去滿庭靑紫絶無人 During the reign of Hyŏllŭng, I submitted my exam on politics.In the year of kabin,I passed the exam in the Sin dynastyand began my career. I sit and count by now how many people have been exiled.Of the high officials who once filled the court,not a single one remains.Yi Saek perhaps said this because no one from the kabin year (1374) examination, who came from the rebel Sin Ton’s dynasty, is left.In the same poem, he also wrote, 捉敗老翁唯四字黜僧還恐似王輪 They accuse this old man of only four words.Dismissing this monk, I’m afraid will be like sending him to Wangnyun. 松軒當國我流離夢裏何曾有此思 Pine Terrace took charge of the kingdom, and I became an exiled wanderer.How could I, even in a dream, have imagined this could happen? What he had intended in here is profound (sim). He also wrote, 彈文直欲殺無赦尙幸竝生天地間 With an impeachment document, he will surely wish for death without pardon.We would be lucky if both of us remain alive somewhere between Heaven and Earth. Here, Yi Saek seems to be addressing Chŏng Tojŏn. King T’aejo (Yi Sŏnggye) once visited Yi Saek to seek advice on his courtesy name and the name for his residence. Based on the phrase, “Autumn osmanthus is pure and white” 桂花秋皎潔, Yi Saek suggested “The Pure Second” (Chunggyŏl 仲潔) as T’aejo’s courtesy name. And since nothing complements osmanthus better than the pine, and also because T’aejo valued moral actions, Yi Saek named T’aejo’s residence “Pine Terrace” 松軒. T’aejo revered Confucianism and valued the Way, so he favored Yi Saek from early on. In his later years, Yi Saek faced impeachment for treachery and came close to great danger, but he was eventually saved. Could this be attributed to the influence of T’aejo’s favor?
