叢話云。辛丑歲奉使關西。仍歷黃海。覆審邊邑農事。辛狀元季琚時爲黃海幕客。迓于黃州。自鳳山偕向安丘。渡延津。題一絶于亭上。屬季琚和之。蕭蕭蘆葦滿汀洲。却恐前呵起白鳩。徙倚江亭空悵望。烟波渺渺晩山愁。辛詩忘未記憶。歷黃鳳安豊殷長瓮海延白諸州。晝則聯鞍諧謔。夜則共榻同眠。名區勝景。吟詠酬唱甚多。明年季琚入玉堂爲修撰。予扈從箭串。以事俱被劾。未幾。季琚得末疾。竟不起。予以詩哭之。有箭串春風同扈駕。延津落日共題詩之句。季琚雅有器局。志節異常。士林咸惜其不遠到。

English Translation

1. According to the Maegye ch’onghwa 梅溪叢話 (Assembled Remarks by Maegye): In the year of sinch’uk (1481), while on an official mission to P’yŏngan province, I did my rounds through Hwanghae province and surveyed again the agricultural activities in the surrounding areas. At the time, Primus Sin Kyegŏ 辛季琚 (15th century) was working as an apparitor in Hwanghae province. We met each other in Hwangju and traveled together from Pong Mountain to Anak and crossed the Yŏnjin River. At a pavilion, I composed a quatrain and asked Sin to write a matching poem. My poem read, 蕭蕭蘆葦滿汀洲却恐前呵起白鷗徙倚江亭空悵望煙波渺渺晩山愁 Swish! Swoosh! Rustling reeds fill the riverbank.I’m afraid my hooting will startle the white gulls into flight. I linger at the river pavilion, gazing wistfully at the sky. Misty waters are boundless, and the evening mountains gloomy. I cannot recall Sin’s poem. We traveled together through Hwangju, Pong Mountain, Anak, P’ungch’ŏn, Ŭnyul, Changyŏn, Ongjin, Haeju, Yŏnan, and Paekch’ŏn. During the day, we rode our horses side by side, exchanging jokes. At night, we slept in the same bed. We visited various scenic spots and composed and exchanged poems with each other. The following year, Sin Kyegŏ entered the Office of Special Advisors (Hongmun’gwan) as the Sixth Counselor (such’an). Together, Sin and I assisted the king on his inspection tour to Chŏn’got. However, we faced trouble and were later impeached together. Not long after, Sin fell ill and eventually did not get up. In the poem I wrote to mourn his death, there is a phrase, 箭串春風同扈駕延津落日共題詩 At Chŏn’got, in the spring breeze, we escorted the royal carriage together. At Yŏnjin, as the sun set, we wrote poems together.Sin was refined and a man of high caliber. His integrity was exceptional. Forest of scholars all felt sorry that he did not advance to high-ranking positions.
