梅溪宿龜城公館。折梅戱賦絶句曰。夜雨生寒瘦玉肌。平明繞樹晩長枝。如今驛使無消息。縱把寒香寄與誰。宿直旨寺曰。綠髮金鑾舊史官。祇園夜宿借蒲團。篝燈細話楞伽字。撲籟風欞雪打寒。此是少年之作。淸警可喜。晩謫義州。途中憶昆秀詩曰。兩兄俱嶺外。一弟在京師。聚散渾如夢。團圓復幾時。長古鳥鵲喜。空咏鶺鴒詩。去去關山遠。回頭祇自悲。寄從弟咸昌守。存愼詩曰。病骨崢嶸瘦十分。鬢毛衰颯白紛紛。覊懷正苦龍灣月。歸夢頻過鳥嶺雲。少日金鑾曾視草。老來鐵馬欲從軍。故園消息今何似。爲間梅兄與竹君。

1. When Cho Wi (sobriquet Maegye [Plum Creek]) was staying at his residence in Kusŏng, Kyŏngsang province, he broke off a branch of plum blossoms and playfully wrote a quatrain. 夜雨生寒瘦玉肌平明繞樹挽長枝如今驛使無消息縱有寒香寄與誰 After a night rain, plum blossoms bloom, slender and fair, like white jades.At the light of dawn, they encircle the trees, twirling around their long branches.Today, the post officer brings no news to share.Even if I have the aroma of plum blossoms,to whom can I send it?His poem “Staying Overnight at Chikchi Monastery” 宿直指寺 reads, 綠髮金鑾舊史官祇園夜宿借蒲團篝燈細話楞伽字樸簌風櫺雪意寒 Dark-haired, in the Hall of Golden Bells,I was once an official historian.Now, I spend the night at a monastery,resting on a borrowed prayer mat.By the lamp, we discuss the finer points ofthe Lankavatara Sūtra.Outside the carved windows, the winds howl,and the snow looks cold. The poem was written during his youth. Clear and profound (ch’ŏnggyŏng), it is delightful (kahŭi). Later, when he was exiled to Ŭiju, he composed the poem “On the Road to Ŭiju, Thinking of My Brothers” 義州途中憶昆季, 兩兄俱嶺外一弟在京師聚散渾如夢團圓復幾時長占烏鵲喜空詠鶺鴒詩去去關山遠回頭秪自悲 Two older brothers in Yŏngnam,one younger brother in the capital.Our gatherings and partings feel like a hazy dream.When will we be reunited once again?Whenever I spot a magpie, I am filled with joy.In vain, I recite the poem of a wagtail.I go farther and farther away from barrier mountains.I look back, overcome with sorrow. His poem “Presented to Cousin and Hamch’ang Prefect Chonsin” 寄贈從弟存愼 reads, 病骨崢嶸瘦十分鬢毛衰颯白紛紛羈懷正苦龍灣月歸夢頻過鳥嶺雲少日金鑾曾視草老來鐵馬欲從軍故園消息今何似爲問梅兄與竹君 My ailing bones are excruciating. I have grown terribly thin.My sideburns are aging, white all over.My wayfaring heart truly aches under the moon at Yongman.Dreams of return keep coming back through the clouds of Bird Hill.In my youthful days, at the Hall of the Golden Bells,I once drafted royal decrees.Now in my old age, riding an armored horseI wish to join the army.What is the news frommy hometown today?Please send my greetings to Brother Plum and Mister Bamboo.
