1. In the year of imin (1482), in Songbang village of Kaeryŏng county, Kyŏngsang province, someone unearthed an old stone statue of the Buddha while tilling his field. The Buddha’s eyes, ears, mouth, and nose had been all worn away and nearly disappeared, so he left it by the field. A person suffering from chronic coughs prayed to it and felt his illness eased. When he claimed that the statue had supernatural power, a crowd of men and women gathered, bringing offerings of rice, cloth, paper, money, incense, candles, flowers and fruits. They came day and night without stopping. A monk came to manage the incense fire, and then a benefactor built a tiled structure to house the statue, saying that he would later build a large monastery. When the prefect of Kimsan, Yi Inhyŏng 李仁亨 (1436–1497), heard about it, he immediately dispatched Confucian scholars and officers, who arrested the monk and drove away the donor. Kim Chongjik had declined the position as a Fourth Counselor (ŭnggyo) and had recently settled in Kimsan. He sent the following congratulatory poem to Prefect Yi, Abandoning the vegetables in the field, forgetting it is spring, what’s so supernatural about that dumb little stone? It started like a wooden monk that begs for food, then gradually became a vulgar rich man’s son cheating people out of their money!Men and women from how many families will it contaminate? With fragrant lanterns, now the whole area wants to worship him. You, my official, truly arethe Prefect of Binzhou, annihilating the bewitching evil and shaking all neighborhoods. |
